Christian Harbulot, founder of the EGE and international expert in economic intelligence, was the guest of the show "Du Grain à moudre" on France Culture to answer the question "Is trade war?"
Donald Trump had promised overseas chinese in uk data to withdraw the United States from the Trans-Pacific Partnership once he came to power. A promise kept yesterday: the American president signed the death certificate of this free trade agreement, which was nevertheless aimed at containing the commercial ambitions of his great adversary: China.
Trump also wants to review NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement. He is hostile to the moribund one with the European Union: the TTIP. And he threatens to: overtax German cars, impose exorbitant customs duties on Chinese products, all to better protect the American economy and its jobs.
At the Davos Forum last week, all the talk was about this trade war that is about to happen. Especially since the United States is not the only one choosing a more aggressive approach to its economic policy. Montesquieu's idea of a "gentle trade" as a factor of peace no longer seems very appropriate in these times.
