The YouTube team has added the ability to allow or prohibit artificial intelligence companies from using their content to train AI in users' profiles. The official announcement from the video hosting service states that video authors must authorize the use of content as training material for AI, otherwise it cannot be used as such.
"The update does not affect the core provisions. Unauthorized access to content, such as unauthorized scraping, is prohibited. We consider this decision an important step towards supporting video creators, helping them realize the value of their content in the new era of artificial intelligence. By collecting brazil telegram feedback, we intend to continue to develop new forms of cooperation and collaboration between creators and third parties, including various options for authorized access to content," the video hosting service said in a statement.
"By deciding to place a mark about permission to use content for AI, the platform is trying to protect itself from possible lawsuits. In the case of using content, AI developers must obtain permission to do so from its author, since the further result created by AI can be monetized," Pavel Rusakov, Director of the Intellectual Property Protection Department of GPM Digital Innovations of Gazprom-Media Holding, told a ComNews correspondent.
The video hosting update reminded Yuri Brisov, partner at the international consulting company D&A Partners LLC, of the concept of informed consent in the legislation on personal data. He noted that the issue of using materials for training AI is a subject of debate and discussion, but it is obvious that artificial intelligence is changing the legal landscape.
"We see the latest high-profile cases: the New York Times versus Open AI, artists versus Stability AI and Midjourney. Regardless of what decisions the courts make, there is no clear answer to where the line between legal implementation of AI and copyright infringement lies. A US court may reject a claimant in a dispute when a Chinese court satisfies the claim in a similar dispute. Therefore, platforms must take a proactive position, without waiting for lawsuits. YouTube has taken an important step that can change the approach to using content to train AI. Imagine that you are a content creator and suddenly get the opportunity to decide who and how can use your creations to train artificial intelligence. This is exactly the opportunity that YouTube now provides. And in matters of content moderation on platforms, YouTube has always taken a proactive position, forming a practice that over the years has become a global standard and formed the basis of the laws of many countries outside the United States," said Yuri Brisov.
