A project is a unique, multidisciplinary, structured effort to deliver products that meet predefined requirements. Project management typically involves multiple personnel, from junior project management professionals to senior project managers.
What is a program?
A program helps achieve a strategic objective. It is a structure of interdependent components that are managed in a coordinated manner . Program management usually requires the commitment of senior project managers and project directors.
What is a portfolio?
A portfolio is a set of projects or programs designed to achieve the strategic objectives of the organization . Projects and programs in a portfolio are not necessarily related to each other. The portfolio manager informs senior management representatives of any significant issues and provides solutions to resolve the problems encountered.
Since project and program management are temporary endeavors, and portfolio management is an ongoing process, the competency elements (CEs) have been structured to cover the full scope of projects, programs, and portfolios .
Core Areas of the IPMA Competency Base
The main areas of the IPMA Competency Base are as follows:
People . The People ECs specify the personal and interpersonal competencies required to successfully lead or participate in a project, program, and portfolio.
Practice . Practice CEs define specific methods, tools, and techniques applied to projects, programs, or portfolios to achieve their objective.
Perspective . Perspective CEs outline the methods, tools, and techniques through which individuals interact with the environment, and the logic that leads people, organizations, and societies to initiate and support projects, programs, and portfolios.
Key Competency Indicators
Within each competency area, there are generic Competency Elements (CEs). These contain a list of specific knowledge and skill elements required to master the CE . Key Competency Indicators (KCIs) provide guidelines for managing successful projects, programs, and portfolios. There are also measures that detail the performance points within each KCI.
In the following sections of the IPMA Certification Guide , we will focus on presenting competencies related to the key areas mentioned above.
