Has online shopping been affected by the economic situation? What kind of products do Spaniards buy online in difficult times? To answer these questions, eBay wanted to analyse the consumption trends of European users. By observing those categories in which the greatest increase in purchases has been detected in 2009, and comparing them with the purchases registered during the first quarter of 2008, the categories that have gained the most importance among consumers in the last 12 months have been revealed.
The reduction in purchasing power teacher data that we are experiencing does not prevent us from looking our best; many consumers save by changing the beauty salon for their own home. eBay.es has verified that in Spain there has been a notable increase in the sale of manicure and pedicure products, with 48%, hair removal products (44%), hair care (29%), and make-up (28%). Another of the categories that has registered the greatest increase in the period analysed in 2009 has been the purchase of underwear and lingerie, with 60%.

Elsewhere in Europe, Ireland has doubled its sales of manicure and pedicure products; Italy and Poland have seen hairdressing product sales increase by 33% and 114% respectively; and Belgium has seen its lingerie sales increase by 32%. The British, on the other hand, are the most conservative and prefer to recycle the clothes they already have, with a 97% increase in shoe repair sales.

Other categories that have seen a notable increase in sales on eBay.es are Plants and Seeds, with 71%, and Gardening Tools (65%). This trend has been observed in all the countries analysed, although with some specificities. In Italy, there has been a 50% increase in sales of outdoor furniture, while in France, the most sold items are greenhouses, with an increase of 73% compared to 2008. Ireland is the "greenest" country in Europe, having registered increases of 125% in plants and seeds and 127% in gardening tools.
