GTmetrix Basics and FAQs
Before we get into the nitty-gritty, let's go over some background information and questions about what GTmetrix offers and how it works .
What does the GTmetrix speed test offer?
GTmetrix speed test tool helps you evaluate your website performance in several ways.
It allows you to see how long your site takes to load. It also helps you analyze why it loads the way it does and how to improve it.
To this end, GTMetrix :
Rate your site based on two different metrics : Google Page Speed and YSlow.
It provides a waterfall diagram and timing analysis that explains how individual requests are loaded and where potential bottlenecks are located.
Make video recordings so you can see how your site loads for visitors.
Record historical test results for the last 30 days so you can analyze how your site's performance changes over time.
Where do GTmetrix scores come from?
GTmetrix does not have its own scoring mechanism but generates scores using two third-party methods:
Google Pagespeed : A set of 26 different rules. Each rule gets its own score and is weighted differently. The aggregate score is where the overall PageSpeed score comes from.
YSlow – YSlow is an open source project from Yahoo that ranks your website against 19 different rules. Just like PageSpeed, your overall score is a weighted result of all those individual rules.
Are GTmetrix scores important?
Yes and no.
Here's the “Yes” part:
You should pay attention to your GTmetrix scores because having low scores probably means you haven’t implemented some important front-end performance best practices.
But here's also the “No” part:
Your visitors don’t care about your GTmetrix scores – they care about how long it takes for your website to load and become interactive.
Having a website that loads in under two seconds but has GTmetrix scores in the 80s is much better than having a site that takes eight seconds to load but scores a perfect 100 on GTmetrix .
Pay attention to the scores because they will give you an overall picture of how optimized your site is, but don't obsess over them because, in the end, the only thing that matters is the loading speed.
Can I run a GTmetrix mobile speed test?
Yes! Also, I highly recommend testing both desktop and mobile performance because most people browse the web on mobile devices.
Knowing how your site loads for desktop visitors is only half the battle because you should do the same test for mobile devices as well.
Mobile devices may have different patterns. For example, JavaScript will take longer to render on a low-powered mobile phone than on a low-end desktop. So if your site has a lot of JavaScript it may have a bigger effect on mobile loading times than desktop loading times.
You won't know unless you specifically test mobile performance.
To run mobile speed tests with GTmetrix , you need to sign up for a free account, but more on that in a second.
