The resonant story of hydrologist Alexander Tsvetkov ended at the end of February: he was cleared of charges in a series of murders committed 20 years ago. Hydrologist Alexander Tsvetkov, who was cleared of charges of a series of murders at the end of February, decided to talk about what happened to him for the first time since his release from pretrial detention and gave an interview to Izvestia.

Alexander Tsvetkov was detained in February 2023. The facial recognition system at Domodedovo Airport reported a 55 percent resemblance to the composite sketch of the alleged criminal, who had been wanted since 2002. Immediately after this, a criminal case was opened against the scientist on charges of four murders, one of which was committed with particular cruelty.

The first of the crimes that they wanted to attribute to Tsvetkov occurred on August 2, 2002, in the village of Gorodishche (now part of New Moscow). According to the version that the investigation tried to prove, the scientist and his accomplice were allegedly visiting one of the local residents. They were drinking, quarreling with the owner of the house, killing him, and burning the house down. That same evening, another murder occurred - the victim was a 64-year-old pensioner. The investigation believed that Tsvetkov and his friend had dealt with her too and taken everything valuable from her apartment.

A few days later, another attack occurred: a woman was robbed under the pretext of renting a room. The owner of the apartment and her 90-year-old mother were killed.

In November 2022, the investigation detained a certain Andrey Aleshin in this case, who had previously been convicted multiple times. It was his testimony that formed the basis of the case against Alexander Tsvetkov. Aleshin told the investigation that he allegedly was a friend of the scientist, with whom he allegedly committed crimes. He claimed that in 2002, Tsvetkov wandered with him in the square of three railway stations in Moscow, drank alcohol, "smoked half a pack of cigarettes a day" and introduced himself as Sasha Chuvash.

The scientist's wife and colleagues at the institute actively fought for him. From the very beginning, they did not believe that a hydrologist who studies rivers and lakes, a father of two children, was capable of monstrous murders 20 years ago.

The conversation with Izvestia was not easy for Alexander Tsvetkov - while reminiscing, the scientist felt ill at one point, so he had to take a break from the interview. He told in detail what he was doing before his arrest and what happened at the airport.

— It was February 2023, my colleagues and I were returning from another expedition to study reservoirs in Bratsk and Krasnoyarsk, — he recalled. — We hadn’t slept for two days, having worked and then spent the day packing and sending the equipment. We arrived in Moscow, we saw a car pulling up to the plane, two people getting out, the flight attendant went down to them, they talked. Then she brought them to me, they asked me if I was Alexander Igorevich Tsvetkov. I said, “Yes.” They told me, “You are wanted all over Russia.” They put handcuffs on me and took me away...
